Learning an instrument from scratch: self taught vs. lessons?

For someone in his mid-20s who has never learned an instrument before, what would be the best course of action for learning how to play music? If self-taught, would you recommend a certain method?

I have a bass guitar but I am also interested in learning to play other instruments such as drums, accordion, mandolin, etc.

Also, are music theory courses beneficial to learning an instrument, or should these courses be taken after one has become proficient enough in playing an instrument?

You’re better off learning from an instructor who knows how to teach the specific instruments. When you teach yourself, you could be teaching yourself wrong but would never know it. It’s better if you take lessons from someone who knows what they’re doing.
