Augusta Heritage Center – Cajun Master – Shelton Manuel
The late Shelton Manuel, Cajun accordion and fiddle master.
Shelton was joined here by Martin Grosswendt on the Fiddle and Tracy Schwarz on the guitar. An impromptu moment outside the dorms, waiting for the evening concert that is held during the cultural week at the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, WV.
Mr. Shelton shared this cajun waltz on the accordion after he finished playing some beautiful songs on the fiddle. (See my other post of Mr. Shelton)
Shelton Manuel was blinded in a hunting accident. He began playing fiddle when he was 16 years old. He also played the Cajun accordion, guitar and drums. You can certainly pick out Shelton on a number of Cajun recordings, not only through his style, but on occasion, he would let out a little “grunt” when he played. I always smile when I hear that and remember this man.
Mr. Manuel passed away at the age of 83 in 2005.
Shot at the Augusta Heritage Center during Cajun/Creole week. Mr Shelton participated as one of the Master Musicians during the week, sharing his vast knowledge of both the Cajun accordion and fiddle with all who had the fortune to sit with him.
