playing piano by ear? what do you think?

I’m 15, female. Really into music. i can play trombone, baritone, french horn, mellophone, trumpet, piano, accordion, and sax. I’ve taught myself all these. i really like the piano playing in rock music. fun stuff. so i decided to get lessons. i listened to mozart and beethoven over and over and played it over and over until i got it right. so on my first piano lesson i played mozart and beethoven and my piano teacher was amazed. i can listen to songs and play them back on piano. for example, the vonage commercial. so is this considered playing by ear? if someone tells me to play a song, for the most part if i know how it goes i can play it.
yeah. like a couple months ago i listened to canon in d and i can pretty much play it back. i can also take that song and the key and make my own version. i just play!
OK I CAN READ MUSIC!! hello?!! i mean i’ve been playing all these different instruments all my life, i learned to read it when i was in 5th grade!!

then you are very talented

you should have no trouble earning a well paid living doing something you enjoy

playing by ear is a great skill. that’s what you are doing. the more you can play by ear, the easier it gets to play your favorite music.
jazz is a great way to train your ear. practice playing the root in your left hand and the 7th and 3rd in you right hand. then, 7th and 3rd in your left hand and extentions in your right hand. if you can hear jazz, you can hear anything.

you have a gift. I would love to see you have a go at violin or cello ; I think you would find this quite challenging but very rewarding too.

    Superb.

I did that too… since I do not know how to read the score.

erm..i think it is fun to be able to play without reading notes…well, i think playing by ear and playing with understanding is slightly different…it would be great if u can clarify what do u mean by playing a classical piece after listening to it…are u trying to say that u reproduce the exact score or the melody with some close harmony……i think if u are doing the first one, u r a genius…but for me, as long as u enjoy what u play , that is good enough……

It’s a good thing you have, God gives you a talent to do it. But most of people play by ear, not by reading a music sheet. People can practice to play by ear.

But I can’t still believe that you can play trombone, baritone, french horn, etc. You must have a good lung and good music talent. Keep on going with your music talent.

Oh, definately. It is an inherited trait and a wonderful talent. Many people who play by ear have perfect pitch which is a huge factor in identifying the notes and the sounds associated with playing by ear.My advise to you being an older music grad would be to learn to read music at some point soon as there will be a time when you will need it

To be able to play by ear is a very good thing. However, it is also necessary to be able to read music so that you can play a piece that you have never heard as well. Also when you play with other people it is very useful to be able to read the score. To read music and "hear" the sound in your head is almost as good a talent.

Well done. I too play by ear and read music. All traditional music is taught by ear here in Ireland. It is a skill which all musicians should cultivate, after all music is an aural thing
